The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day Empty The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day

Post by blezzin Mon Feb 02, 2015 2:18 pm

The January transfer window has flown by. It has been a very quiet month in terms of activity, as Premier League teams have opted to persevere with the crop of players already at the club for the main part.
Wilfried Bony’s £28 million transfer from Swansea to Manchester City remains the biggest deal by some margin, whilst Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace have been the busiest team, bringing in no less than four reinforcements.

With the window slamming shut tonight, Deadline Day represents the best chance for clubs to improve their squads for the final sprint to the finish line. There are always ways of improving, and here are the areas where each club should be looking to improve their team on the final day of the window if only one position-per-team were allowed.

Arsenal

The Gunners have brought in central defender Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal, but their squad still needs a top-class defensive midfielder despite Francis Coquelin’s recent emergence. It is unlikely that Arsene Wenger will dip into the market again, but a player in the mould of Morgan Schneiderlin coming in would represent the perfect window.

Morgan Schneiderlin has made 36 interceptions from 16 league appearances this season.

Who they should potentially sign: William Carvalho, Morgan Schneiderlin, Lars or Sven Bender, Ilkay Gundogan
Aston Villa
Goals have been the major problem for Villa this term. They have only scored 11 league goals in 22 matches, which is quite a pathetic tally. Scott Sinclair and Carles Gil have reinforced the wide areas this month, but a goal-scoring midfielder needs to be signed to support Christian Benteke. Only one midfielder has scored a league goal for Villa this season

Aston Villa have scored just 11 goals so far this season — the lowest goal tally of all 92 clubs in the English league system.

Who they should potentially sign: Chris Brunt, Charlie Adam, Matt Ritchie, Niko Kranjcar, Michail Antonio

Burnley

The Clarets are performing above all expectations in 17th place, and will need to hold on to prized asset Danny Ings if they are to have a chance of staying up. Sean Dyche does not really need to bring a player in as he rarely rotates his side, but some more legs in central midfield would be handy.

Sean Dyche is getting by with a very small squad at present. Injuries to his first-choice midfielders could be a major blow to Burnley’s survival hopes.

Who they should potentially sign: Glenn Whelan, Matt Ritchie, Matthieu Flamini, Shaun Williams, Jay Spearing

Chelsea

Juan Cuadrado looks set to be on the move to Stamford Bridge with Mohammed Salah moving in the opposite direction. It is difficult to improve on the current squad, but the only area that the Blues look remotely light in is in defence. If John Terry and Gary Cahill were to pick up injuries, Chelsea would struggle to replace them, so another central defender would give them a nice safety net in all positions.

Central defence is perhaps the only shallow point in Jose Mourinho’s squad. With Branislav Ivanovic needed on the right, a major injury in the middle could cause problems.

Who they should potentially sign: Raphael Varane, Nicolas Otamendi, Mats Hummels, Andrea Barzagli, Aymeric Laporte

Crystal Palace

Pardew has been a busy man since he took over at Selhurst Park. Yaya Sanogo, Shola Ameobi, Jordon Mutch and Pape Souare have freshened up the squad nicely, but central defence is another area in which they look quite light. Palace have leaked goals recently, and a proven Premier League defender could be exactly what they need.

Crystal Palace’s central defenders benchmarked against the best defender in the relegation battle at present, going by Performance Score: Gareth McAuley.

Who they should potentially sign: Samuel Umtiti, Tom Lees, Richard Keogh

Everton

This season has been a nightmare for Roberto Martinez, and although he insists that he will not strengthen this month, another wide option appears necessary. With Kevin Mirallas itching for a move to Tottenham, according to The Evening Standard, that would leave just Aidan McGeady and Steven Pienaar as viable candidates to start. The Toffees must add some more flair to their midfield

Losing Kevin Mirallas this month might hamper Everton’s chance creation out wide amid an already strained campaign in the bottom half of the league.

Who they should potentially sign: Aaron Lennon, Adnan Januzaj, Serge Gnabry, Mohamed Salah

Hull

The Tigers are ravaged with injury problems and embroiled in a relegation battle. They need a boost, and the perfect way of doing that would be to spend big on Deadline Day. Although a marquee striker would be welcome, they need a winger as they have failed to replace the injured Robert Snodgrass all year.

Things have been better for Steve Bruce, whose side are struggling this season after an ambitious summer transfer window.

Who they should potentially sign: Aaron Lennon, Patrick Bamford, Patrick Roberts, Serge Gnabry

Leicester

Bottom club Leicester look like they are on the right track to launch a survival bid. They have depth in most positions, but one area where Nigel Pearson needs another option is in central defence. Robert Huth has joined the club on loan, as reported by BBC Sport, and he will add both experience and leadership to the back-line.

Leicester target Robert Huth hasn’t made many appearances for Stoke this season, but last year he was dominant in the air and also made eight defensive actions-per-game.

Who they should potentially sign: Tom Lees, Richard Keogh, Michael Mancienne

Liverpool

It is strange that Liverpool are in desperate need of a striker when you consider the fact they brought in Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert in the summer. However both have failed to live up to expectations, meaning Raheem Sterling or Fabio Borini have led the line recently. If the Reds could bring in a top-class finisher today, a top four finish is on the cards.

A comparison of Liverpool’s attacking options. Can Daniel Sturridge stay fit?

Who they should potentially sign: Carlos Bacca, Mario Mandzukic, Antonio Di Natale, Danny Ings

Manchester City

Like Chelsea, it is difficult to say where second-placed Manchester City need to strengthen. They are strong in all areas, but could be on the verge of losing James Milner on a free in the summer, meaning a top-class wide midfielder would be an excellent acquisition, as it would allow David Silva to play in his favoured number 10 role full-time.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day 4543525

Should City move to pre-empt a possible James Milner departure in order to get the best out of David Silva?

Who they should potentially sign: Antoine Griezmann, Marco Reus, Gareth Bale, Raheem Sterling

Manchester United

Manchester United are in need of reinforcements in all sorts of positions, but despite having one of the best defensive records in the division, they need a central defender desperately. Mats Hummels, Diego Godin or Aymeric Laporte would be perfect signings to add much-needed leadership to the Red Devils’ back-line.

United’s three big defensive targets compared to their two best performers at the back this season.

Who they should potentially sign: Mats Hummels, Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi, Mateo Mussachio, Marquinhos

Newcastle

Although the temporary appointment of John Carver as the new head coach may stop Newcastle doing any business, their squad is in need of a revamp. A new left-back would be a nice acquisition, as although Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara have performed adequately there, no-one has really nailed down that position all season.

With Davide Santon likely to be on his way out of St. James’ Park, Newcastle’s left-back slot could do with more quality.

Who they should potentially sign: Chris Solly, Nacho Monreal, Danny Rose, Samuel Umtiti

QPR

Harry Redknapp has a history of swooping late on Deadline Day for new signings, and it could be another late finish for the QPR boss tonight. He has been linked with Emmanuel Adebayor and Mark Noble in recent days, but an exciting left winger, like Bakary Sako, would be a worthwhile signing as the Hoops lack depth on that side of their midfield.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day 4105046

QPR may need to purchase a new wide supply to feed their top transfer target Emmanuel Adebayor.

Who they should potentially sign: Bakary Sako, Aaron Lennon, Serge Gnabry, Jesse Lingard

Southampton

Fourth placed Southampton are the surprise of the season, but they need a quality back-up to Graziano Pelle if they are to remain in the top four. Should the Italian get injured, they would struggle to replace his presence and goals, meaning signing a striker on Deadline Day will be high on Ronald Koeman’s priority list.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day 4555694

Burn out or an injury to Graziano Pelle could derail Southampton’s season.

Who they should potentially sign: Britt Assombalonga, Callum Wilson, Roberto Soldado,

Stoke

It was revealed last week that Bojan picked up a serious knee injury against Rochdale in the FA Cup, and will be out for the rest of the season. This means that Stoke will be looking to replace his creativity before the window shuts. Although Mark Hughes has played down all transfer talk, don’t be surprised to see a creative midfielder join the Potters today.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day Screenshot-2015-02-02-at-09.48.23

With Bojan injured, Stoke’s creative midfield options look short.

Sunderland

The Black Cats are another side that have badly struggled for goals this season, registering a league-high six goal-less draws so far this term. Jermain Defoe has been brought in on a long-term deal to help sort out that issue, but you get the feeling that Gus Poyet needs another forward option if Sunderland are to avoid another relegation dogfight.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day 4555124

Jermain Defoe’s goals have given Sunderland a welcome attacking boost, but do the Black Cats need more?

Swansea

Swansea have had a busy month in the transfer market, bringing in Jack Cork, Kyle Naughton and Nelson Oliveira. However having lost Bony, and with Bafetimbi Gomis appearing unsettled, Garry Monk should be in the market for another striker. Highly-rated Anderlecht forward Aleksandar Mitrovic would be a coup, whilst Jordan Rhodes remains an option.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day Screenshot-2015-02-02-at-09.53.27

Without Wilfried Bony, Garry Monk needs to find a finisher to fire Swansea through the second half of the season.

Tottenham

With Aaron Lennon on the verge of a move away from White Hart Lane, Tottenham look short in the wide positions. Although any deal for Mirallas may have to wait until the summer, Mauricio Pochettino may look to other options that could be available earlier. However it is more likely that Spurs will remain dormant in this transfer window.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day 4524864

Aaron Lennon could leave White Hart Lane on transfer deadline day. Will Spurs need to bring in a replacement?

West Brom

Tony Pulis’ revamp of this West Brom side looks like it is going right down to the wire. Expect a busy day of transfer activity at the Hawthorns as the new head coach looks to add to the recent signing of Callum McManaman. A striker appears to be at the top of his agenda, after he was linked with a loan swoop for Adebayor by The Daily Mail.
The Problem Positions Each Premier League Club Will Be Looking To Solve On Deadline Day Screenshot-2015-02-02-at-09.59.09

Saido Berahino has carried West Brom’s attack for much of the season. Tony Pulis must strengthen his options up front if he can.

West Ham

What a season it has been for West Ham. Sam Allardyce has worked wonders at Upton Park, as the Hammers lie in eighth place in the Premier League table. With Stewart Downing impressing so heavily in a more central role, a left winger would be a worthwhile purchase, but this West Ham side doesn’t really need tinkering with.

Apart from corners from the right, most of Stewart Downing’s creativity has come through the middle rather than out wide
